Backyard Sustainable Agriculture

Posted in Homestead Garden and Farm

This is a good video for those interested in sustainable agriculture.  It is particularly helpful for those of us who are renting or have limited space.

Anyone here with advice on this subject, please share it with us, too!  This is something our family and a few good friends are looking at putting into practice in the very near future.

Blessings,

Catherine

Jul. 25, 2008 - Backyard Farming

Posted by Anonymous

A backyard commercial farming movement is gathering momentum, throughout the U.S. and Canada, and it is composed of SPIN farmers. SPIN farmers work plots less than an acre in size, utilize relay cropping to increase yield and achieve good economic returns by growing only the most profitable food crops tailored to local markets. SPIN's growing techniques are not, in themselves, breakthrough. What is novel is the way a SPIN farm business is run. Contained in the seven SPIN Guides, which can be purchased online and downloaded for immediate access, is everything you'd expect from a good franchise: a business plan, marketing advice, and a detailed day-to-day workflow. In standardizing the system and creating a reproducible process it really isn't any different from McDonalds. And SPIN-style farming removes the two big barriers to entry – sizeable acreage and significant start-up capital. By offering a non-technical, easy-to-understand and inexpensive-to-implement commercial farming system, it allows many more people to farm, as long as there are markets to support them. You can see some SPIN farmers in action at www.spinfarming.com

You and your readers may be interested in the Science Barge (http://nysunworks.org/?page_id=9), which is a facility dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture in urban settings. The New York Academy of Sciences just did a Podcast all about the Science Barge. You can hear from a couple of the staff there and get a taste of what they do and what you'd see and hear about on their tour.

You can listen to the podcast here: http://www.nyas.org/snc/podcastdetail.asp?id=1834
