End of summer bounty...

Posted in Vegetable Gardening

Where I live there is opportunity for growing a fall vegetable garden quite easily.  I spent the morning pulling weeds, watering some things and planting a few new things for fall.  I have some Roma tomatoes starting to poke their little heads through the soil and I put a new crop of scallions in.  I will be putting some lettuces in over the coming weeks.  I transplanted an eggplant plant because I have gotten NOTHING off it all summer. I figured if I lose it at this point at least I tried a new spot with less shade and bulk around it for a more open area with more sun.  I am also still getting some zucchini and tomatoes from the garden quite often.  I also have a small August crop of strawberries.  My herbs are still doing well and a few more bell peppers and jalapenos are on their way to maturity.

A neighbor friend shared some basil, carrots and grape tomatoes with us yesterday.  Here are some recent pics of everything...

From our garden... yellow pear tomatoes, jalapenos, mini romas and grape tomatoes

Carrots from a friend's garden.  I think I will be growing some next year.  They are YUMMO!!!

Tiny little strawberries. They are getting bigger with each crop but still so tiny and tart.

Grape tomatoes on the vine.  Aren't they beautiful?

Herb and strawberry bed with the moved eggplant... not doing so hot.  I hope it is better by tomorrow.

My pecan tree!  I love this tree...  :)

Some of my heirloom tomatoes.  They are so wonderful!!!

We turned our old dog kennel into a tomato, zucchini and squash and jalapeno garden this year.  The tomatoes have just climbed right up the sides.  It keeps animals out pretty well, too.

Some roses in bloom right now...

My JFK roses are coming back alive after some hot days

Little tea rose bud starting.  Kinda blurry... but is is lovely.

If you grow ANYTHING in your garden or windowbox and use it to make a dish in your kitchen then you should take pictures and post on it and pass it along to Andrea. You can check out Andrea's blog for all the details. I will be putting one up and hope to see what you all are doing with your garden abundance, too. The deadline is August 29th so get to pickin' and cookin'. :)

Some garden photos...

I put two beds in this year and we have been enjoying fresh tomatoes, jalapenos, squash and herbs all summer.  We have corn coming and some more peaches that are almost ripe, too.  It is all organically grown and I have been fighting white flies.  If you have suggestions and getting rid of white flies and little wormy bugs that eat leaves besides picking them off one at a time and stomping them I would appreciate the advice.  It has been one dry summer, too.  We are in the desert southwest and seeing no rain in sight.  Anyway, pics...

The herbs, corn, strawberries and a few carrot and beets starting to come up.  Note the very dry grass - we cannot keep it watered with restrictions on water here.  Please send rain!!!

Our second batch of peaches are almost ready!

Garden gone wild...  tomatoes of several varieties, yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant, scallions, and jalapenos.  I just hope there is not a SNAKE in that mess!!!  LOL
