The Homestead Act of 1862

Posted in On the Homestead

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/today/may20.html- How blessed these people were. They were probably the hardest workers America has ever seen. Without them, the land would not have been settled. A true testament to the bravery and strength of early settlers.

Bless all who pass this way!

Nuts!

Posted in Family Life

Its pretty quiet right now. Except for the thunking of copious amounts of walnuts tumbling out the three in the back yard. I’ve been watching Sassafras out their in the yard with buckets- diligently filling each with walnuts- dumping and filling some more. She’s about got hit a few times with the ka-thunking nuts but continues to steadfastly fill buckets. I am amazed at her diligence and stick-to-it-iveness. I doubt I’d be out there singing and talking to myself and continuing picking up (well, I would be doing the talking to myself part)- I’m sure I’d have quit after the about the 3rd five gallon bucketful. I would probably have shaken my fist at that tree and murmured a few things when it kept showering down more nuts. I doubt I would have persevered as she is. She’s been out their for a good half hour or so. It is a joy to watch my beautiful daughter in the warm afternoon sun.
I do believe I have it in me to join her and fill up a couple of buckets.
And then
Perhaps
a bit of sweet chocolate for the two of us.

A few pictures.....

Posted in Family Photos

I'm even less inspired to blog today than before Homestead ate my first post. Grrrr!

Here are a few pictures from Elijah's birthday:

Yes, it's a decent cake. Not spectacular, but fair for icing piped out of the end of a plasic baggie. I still can't find my cake decorating things!

I can't believe how BIG Samuel is. He's so . . . so grown up!

And, here is me. At 25 weeks.

And now, I hope this posts. Because I'm definatly not inspired enough to blog it again a third time!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

just a quick update

Posted in The Week in Review

If only the temps would drop a bit so that I could feel like it was officially fall! The wind is blowing the leaves off of the trees today. The colors are at their peak and I'm looking forward to viewing them in all of their splendor on Sunday when our family gets together with my BIL and his family to ride down the Abingdon Creeper Trail. I hope I remember to take the camera this time. I have blown soooo many photo opportunities this year by forgetting the camera. 2008 is going to be a very small section in the kids' scrapbooks whenever I get around to working on them again. I've given up feeling guilty about not keeping them up to date ... I figure I'll catch up when they go to college and then I'll be able to turn them over to them once they are graduated and on their own!

My husband got confirmation last night direct from the CEO of his company that next week is the week when he will FINALLY get a raise! Hallelujah! It's been a long time coming and it has really increased our faith that our company is going to make it through this economic turmoil. They have spent two years restructuring themselves to make it through this recession ... they were actually a bit ahead of the curve on that call and I am so thankful for that! We do not want to have to look for another job elsewhere, especially with the housing market the way it is.

Tomorrow, the pumpkins arrive for our church's Pumpkin Patch. Last year was our first year doing this and I hope this year runs smoother. Gonna spend most of the day at the church tomorrow working on last minute projects before we open next Thursday. My sister is sending me a bunch of homemade jewelry to sell on the weekends at the Patch and donating a portion of each sale to our chosen charities. I will, of course, be wearing all of the EarBling that she created for me and taking orders for those as she just really can't send me one of everything. I finally found a divided container to hold all of my beautiful crystal dangles and I should take a picture to share them all with you ... they are divided out by color now and it makes it so much easier to choose a pair to wear each morning.

Even with me opening up the house on cool mornings, our electric bill last month was $35 more than the previous month. On the bill was a note stating that we would see 30% increases on our monthly bills this winter. Yikes! So, we plan to do a couple of things to help out this winter. With me home by myself each day, I can bundle up and crank the heat down. I may look into buying a small space heater to keep me toasty. At night, the beds will be layered down to keep us warm so that I can turn the thermostat down for the night. I'll just warm up the house about 30 minutes before the alarm goes off. We are putting all of our plugs on power strips that we can turn off each night and/or leave off until needed. Finally, we are going to be putting those foam insulation things into all of the light switches and plug sockets. They are supposed to help a lot! Last winter, I put heavier drapes on the windows and kept them closed to keep the rooms warmer and that worked well, too.

I have barely started my cross-stitch project, but at least it's now ready to just pick up and stitch. My daughter is working on a project as well and learning the not-so-fun task of ripping out stitches when the count is done incorrectly. Oh well - live and learn, right? She is enjoying it for the most part. I cross-stitched a lot while in high school and before children came, so I am hoping that she developes that same affinity for this craft as it is fairly easy and inexpensive. I love to cross-stitch gifts for others and have a few planned for the future, but am going to start on something for me now. I usually have a couple of projects going at the same time to prevent boredom. Time to get off the computer and get on with the rest of my day - there is laundry to fold, a kitchen to clean and some other odd chores awaiting my attention. I hope you have a great holiday weekend!

Pastor moved by God to meet McCain/Palin...Please read....

When I read about this I felt compelled to share this with all of you. It is a true story about a Pastor who was moved by God to go and share a message with Senator John McCain, Governor Sarah Palin and Mr. Todd Palin. Please if you have time to read this do so. This is not a hoax but a true story. Here is the direct link to the Pastor's site: http://www.agreeinprayer.com/ that has the story and an interview with him. I have also copied and pasted the story below in case you are not able to open the link for some reason  or have a slow moving computer.

Pastor Mark Arnold
believed what God told him to do and obeyed God and on Tuesday Morning, September 9, 2008  made a trip to Lebanon, Ohio, where he was able to give a "message" from the LORD to Mr. John McCain and Todd and Sarah Palin.
The overcast skies that brought rain for the early morning crowd didn't dampen anyone's spirits.  The "rains" were simply a sign for the rest of the day.  Just prior to the McCain/Palin Bus pulling up the clouds began to break up and the sun came out to at least take off the chill and dampness.  The warm sunshine
felt so good.

Many people camped up and down the streets so they could assure themselves a great place to catch a glimpse of McCain and Sarah Palin.  Many people came prepared for the Long Haul...they waited and waited and then all that waiting was turned into great excitement as the MC of the Morning Program was Hall of Fame Football player - Anthony Munoz - and when he got up to speak...the crowd received all that he had to say.  The mood was set, the Bus arrived...and out of the Bus came two very like-minded people - ready to go to work.

10,000 people waiting to greet the McCain/Palin Bus

The day the McCain/Palin Bus pulled into Lebanon, Ohio, 10,000 people were waiting to greet them and to hear what they had to say about all the issues that our Nation is facing at the present.

PASTOR GIVES MESSAGE TO JOHN McCAIN, TODD & SARAH PALIN

On Tuesday, Sept. 9th,  the McCain / Palin Bus came through a little town called, Lebanon, Ohio.
The LORD allowed me to go to the Rally giving  them a message that He wanted me to personally deliver.
Sunday Night - a burden hit me that would only shake me to my knees - I prayed and wept for our Nation.  Never has my heart been so broken before God.  I literally interceded for these wonderful people who do not deserve all the hate against them.  The GOD-Haters are going to try everything to stop them, but they will not succeed!
God is not pleased with the "bashing" in the News of this "Anointed" person.  He has called her for this time!  I promised God that I would pray and hold them up in prayer.  I would "listen" out and be mindful of where they were.  The following day is important in this time-line...because I didn't even know until
God spoke to me...
Monday and into Monday Night - the burden of prayer was so heavy that I was literally shaking and could not stop weeping.  I didn't know that they were coming to Ohio.  I prayed and walked and wept and walked.  I prayed and prayed and wept and prayed...
Tuesday at 2:00 A.M. - God spoke these words to me - "...Go turn the Radio on!"  Immediately the the Reporter's Words were - "McCain & Palin Bus to be in Lebanon later this morning for a 10:00 A.M. Rally!"
Immediately on hearing that news, I heard God again...
God said, "You are to go.  You will meet them and give them a message for Me!"
I prayed as an intercessor and went to a place in prayer that I don't think I've ever been...because the LORD had just visited me...and I knew I was on a "Mission." I had now been up since Sunday NIght...and now it's Tuesday and I've got to go on the "WORD of the LORD."  He sure became My Strength as this unfolds...
I didn't stop praying until I drove over to the town and parked the car.  The News would later report they were expecting 5,000 people and the actual head-count of those who had been scanned was more than 10,000 people.
I simply obeyed...and God actually told me where to stand, who to talk to...and when to be on themove.  I had sure learned on the Mission Field, when God wants to open a door, He will do it at the appropriate time.  He always has someone to assist...and even those standing beside you may just be an Angel.
I struck up a conversation with an agent on the ground - he simply said, "I can't allow you to stand here!"Here is where the bus was going to actual pull up to.  They had to make a much larger perimeter so the entire area was now being moved back several blocks.  The only other thing he told me to do was to go through the metal detector zone and just watch from the back.  So, that's what I did.
Due to sensitivity of the internet...I can't share much of the story as to what happened next was a definite GOD THING ALL THE WAY.  Looking over the shoulders and backs and heads of all those people...I knew it would take a miracle for what GOD told me to do.
As I was standing there, two Boy Scouts came running up my back...literally, they almost knocked me to the ground because they were running so fast behind me...up my back and over to the right.  These Boy Scouts were about Junior High Age.  Their Scout Leader and several others were behind them...but as the two out front was trying to push through the crowd, saying they were late...the smaller scouts were left in their dust.  The Scout Leader who was with a McCain Rep from the State grabbed me and told me bring the other Scouts up front as they try to keep up with the first two that just came through.
I just became the leader of the rest of the Scouts to lead them right up front and center.  As the Rep was shouting back at me...to bring the Scouts forward...the people parted just like God parted the Red Sea.
I marched them boys right up front and to the right of the stage as one was looking from the back.  When I got there I was fifteen feet from the podium.  GOD said, "Stand here, and don't move from this spot."
Within five minutes...the bus pulled up and around the other side McCain, Sarah Palin and her husband Todd stepped up and the speeches took off.  I was where God placed me...and even Sarah Palin and Todd were standing on my side of the stage.  I made eye contact, I gave them thumbs up gestures...and I knew they were just happy to see me standing there.  Ha Ha
When they came around the podium and started on the other side, I knew they were coming right toward me, a little lady who stood by me, reached up and told the Rep that they had promised a Picture with her because she was the one who had lost a son in Iraq, recently.  The Rep confirmed she would get a pic with them and they would talk to her.
When McCain came to hug her... he immdiately shook my hand and following his moment with her, I shook his hand as he grabbed my hand, now for the second time, and I said, "God wants you to know that I'm praying for you, Sir!"  He thanked me and kept smiling.  I repeated that phrase to him five times.  He grabbed my hands and looked right into my eyes and said, "I won't make it without prayer.  Sir, Thank You for praying for me, and don't let one day go by that you don't pray for me.  I need all the prayers that I can get. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!"
As he moved to my right, Sarah Palin, came over to my left side...standing over the crowd and  then looking at the little lady who had lost the son.  It took a moment for her to shake some hands and people were pushing in all around.  Sarah came and got on her hands and knees on that side of the stage and hugged that little Mom, telling her, "...it was not in vain."  She promised her support.
It was at this moment Sarah Palin, reached out for me to help her up and as I was assisting her to stand was now face to face with her and GOD said, "Open up your Mouth and I will fill it."
     Here is what came out...
"God wants you to know that you are a present day Esther!"
[She immediately began to cry]!
"God wants to tell you that you are Chosen for such a time as this!"
"You are called, and chosen to be a leader."
"Don't lose heart and don't fear man."
"The news and nay-sayers and criticizers are going to be very hateful toward you...and in the days ahead they are going to turn up the heat...but do not fear."
"You are a present day Esther."   You are an Esther.  You are an Esther!
"Keep your eyes on GOD and know that He has chosen you to Reign!" "Stay strong...be strong...don't tire.  Don't be weary in well-doing.  Be strong."
Her husband Todd came over and I told him what I told her.  He began to cry.
I emphasized the fact that he was to guard her at this time...and know that
"...she is GOD-CALLED and GOD-ANOINTED."
"...this is a GOD-THING and your wife is a Present day Esther...she is for God to use at this time...She is an Esther...she is an Esther...she is an Esther."
"You will be hated...but stand strong...GOD has called both of you to stand!"
"We are praying and I am praying for you...!"
At this moment, McCain came right to where I was finishing talking to Todd and I and I told Mr. McCain exactly what I told Sarah and Todd Palin.
"Mr. McCain, ...they are called of God and she is an Esther."
"Don't lose hope and don't lose heart."
"We are praying for all of you!"
He shook my hand and with a deep look of understanding what I had just said,
he said, "Thank you for your prayers and support...I really do mean that!"
And he turned and shook more hands...and I watched them as they went through
the crowd.
When I got to my car I sat there for quite a long time...knowing the GOD of the Universe had just used me to deliver a message confirming to Sarah and Todd
to realize they are truly chosen vessels of God.
I wept.  I have not stopped praying and crying.  My heart is full knowing they had to have all the staging and all the hype and all the crowd...but the GOD of Heaven and Earth...wanted to give them a Divine-God-Appointment!
To God be all the GLORY and HONOR.
I if anyone wants to know IF I BELIEVE GOD CAN SPEAK?  My Answer is - Absolutely Yes!
Be praying for me.  And MOST OF ALL, Don't let God always have to do His part alone.  You and I are called to Pray and intercede and influence others to Vote!
Stand on the Wall.  Make a difference and LIFT JESUS HIGHER ALL OVER THE WORLD!

NEWSTART... and disclaimer

Posted in General Notices

I assigned categories for the pieces of health information that I plan to write about.  These categories focus mainly on the acronym NEWSTART.  I have added a couple other categories which really do not relate to the NEWSTART acronym, and may continue to add a category or two as necessary.

The NEWSTART acronym is described below:

N- Nutrition

E - Exercise

W - Water

S - Sunshine

T - Temperance

A - Air

R - Rest

T - Trust in God

Remembering the different parts of NEWSTART can help one to remind themselves of the areas that can improve one's health.  We hardly ever fall apart because of ONE problem, but rather it is usually a combination of health struggles.  Making changes in one area may show improvement, but it likely is not going to be a lifelong answer to our struggles.  NEWSTART can help us towards a healthier lifestyle.  It isn't about diet to lose weight, or sleeping pills to get our rest, but simply getting back to what we were designed to live by.

DISCLAIMER:

A disclaimer that I want to add is that some of us have bodies that are far along in disease processes.  Changing late in the game is likely not going to cure us, however, we may see decreased symptoms by making healthy lifestyle changes.  A diabetic may still be a diabetic, but their blood sugar levels  are easier to control.  Also because of sin,  our bodies have become run down after generations of misuse.  That means our children can have problems like allergies or other horrible diseases that are not caused by how they are living, but rather a compilation of problems in our own genetics that we have passed down to them, or problems caused while growing in the womb...not to mention the exposure of so many things that are just considered normal these days... (chemicals, pesticides, immunizations, pollution, etc.) that can adversely affect one even though many others can take those exposures without much of a symptom at all.  So, do be realistic in making changes, they won't cure us overnight and they may not cure us at all.  Some changes may relieve us of some symptoms, but some changes could be detrimental to our specific medical condition.

What does that mean?  If you have a medical condition or your children are sick, please read for guidance of where to go for information, not to substitute for medical treatment.  Making changes without your medical doctor's knowledge can cause big problems.  Medications you may be on may become too strong when making changes to a healthier lifestyle and without some guidance from your doctor on how to wean from your medications, you may end up sicker trying to live healthier than when you just lived "as is" with your medications.  Also, if you are ever feeling concerned or overwhelmed with a situation, do not try to do it on your own, just because it is healthier.  Our gut feelings are there for us to seek help.  And sometimes we do not notice something going terribly wrong because we are untrained in knowing what to look for.

Now, I do not want this to deter you from trying natural remedies or lifestyle changes.  Just when you do it, make wise choices and if under medical care, take it to your doctor to explain what you are wanting to try.  Some doctors are not supportive of healthy lifestyle/home remedies... in that case, find one who is and one who knows what you are talking about because not all doctors know what home remedies even are as many are not trained in that area or they have seen disasterous cases from one trying to cure themselves on their own.  Often a person will misdiagnose a problem and the "cure" they are using will never work, but only cause the problem to continue without restraint.

Many medical missionaries treat others with home remedies and teach unschooled mothers and fathers in treatments where medical facilities are too far away or too expensive.  These treatments are taught and used all over the world and have improved lives.  Why we don't use them here in America boggles my mind.  With medical care so expensive and drug treatments sometimes noneffective or the side effects so damaging, we need to go back to some simple ways of healing.

In summary, I do not feel anyone should be afraid of remedies or lifestyle changes.  Many changes are as simple as not eating cheetos and eating a whole grain cracker instead.  Some home remedies you can practice even while on medications and see increased results above what just the medication alone will do.  As your skill improves, you will feel more confident.  As time goes by, you will understand how our bodies work and see why something will or will not work in a situation.   Be wise in your decisions; pray and ask for guidance.

Warmly, ~Melissa

Quote Of The Day

Posted in Quote Of The Day
Grandma Rosie of Grandma Rosie's Texas Home posts classic quotes, and I want to do it too!

I really enjoyed this one by Charles H. Spurgeon -

A sacred regard to the authority of God ought to lead us to
reject an error, however old, sanctioned by whatever authority,
or however generally practiced.

      -- Charles H. Spurgeon

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did,

Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

I hope you have enjoyed reading the thoughts and happenings of a fourteen-year-old girl from the country. “You can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens you!” Philippians 4:13
