Civil War Unit Study - North Star Safe Quilt

Posted in Homeschooling

We are working on the following activity, taken from "The Civil War for kids" by Janis Herbert

The Civil War for Kids: A History with 21 Activities (For Kids series)

The North Star Safety Quilt.  Did you know when there were underground railroads that they would have certain signs so runaways or others involved knew it was a safe place to come.  One sign was a lantern in a certain window.  Another was a quilt hanging with the North Star on it.

As part of our unit study we are making a mini version of this quilt.  Each of my children is working on it.  WE started yesterday and I will update with pics!!!

WE are really enjoying this book.  I borrowed it from the library - good to check there first on things - helps to save money.  Several unit studies I read reccomend it and I would too!

We are studying the Civil War too and I really am learning a lot along with the kids. My view of the South has changed drastically and I really love Stonewall Jackson. Have you all watched 'Gods and Generals' and 'Gettysburg'? Two awesome movies and very factual. I will be looking up the book you mentioned this afternoon when we go to the library!!
Smiles, Linda
