Chicken Question
We are definitely homestead wanna be's and are learning as we go:) We have two white silkies and my youngest is going to show at the fair.
My question - The one Rooster has blue ear lobes... he did not before. Does anyone know what this is a sign of? I am sure it means he is sick but we don't know what to do and have not found any info on as of yet..

I gotta be honest, you're further along in this homesteading process than I am. We don't have any chickens...I don't think we even could where we live. But...from my very limited research on the subject on the internet in hopes of answering your question, I don't think you have anything to worry about with the blue earlobed rooster. It appears the lobes come in white, red and turquoise and apparently there's some debate as to whether this determines egg color. Hopefully someone can more succinctly answer your question, someone who's actually ever owned a rooster and not just wondered "why do they have to crow all day long?", but it doesn't sound like he's sick from what I can tell.

Hi Flossie...
We just had a hen with a blue leg. She was limping, and the rest of the flock(in this pen of 20) was pecking her. So my husband put her down and we did not eat her.
We are new to this too, although we now have over 70 hens, 4 ducks 2 roosters and a goose.
I wonder if you could swing in and chat with the vet, as he might just give some free advice.
