Ok, not sure what to title my blog.

• 2007-Feb-18 - Three Things to Look for in a Laptop

Just because the laptop is made by Dell or HP doesn’t mean it’s the best laptop to buy!

I’ve learned that there are three main things to look for when shopping for a laptop.

And now that Vista is out, these three thing are not only preferred, they’re mandatory!

#1. Ram

#2. Processor

#3 Hard drive speed

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It’s what your programs, background operations, and OS (operating system) are running on. When you launch a program it pulls it up off the hard drive and sets it on the ram. The ram is operating the program.

To operate Windows XP, it takes at least 128MB (MB = megabyte – a byte is one bit of information - just one little pocket of data. Mega is million. So, a megabyte is an amount of data one million bytes large). Windows Vista takes a minimum of 512MBs, and that’s  just to run the OS itself! You’ll want at least 1GB (GB = gigabyte - 1024 megabytes) of ram. That should be enough to run the OS and some regular tasks like email, office programs, and to perform light gaming.

I highly recommend 2GBs of ram.

The processor is the “brain” of your computer. Highly important: DON’T get a cheap processor. The processor organizes or processes all the information that is being sent around the computer. There are two main processor manufacturing companies, Intel and AMD. With AMD you’ll get more bang for your buck, but Intel leads the industry. It’s slightly faster (meaning it processes the information more rapidly) and its energy consumption is more efficient. Both are very important with a laptop. But AMD isn’t far behind. Both make the duo core processor. If you do go with AMD I’d get the 64x2 which is a duo core processor, 64 bits in each core. A little history: when the processor was first made it only had one core that was usually 32 bits. Up until now, that’s what we’ve used but these days they are making them with two cores which is very efficient! The best have two cores that are 64 bits each.

I highly recommend the Intel Core 2 Duo (T5500) processor. Pricy but well worth it!

The hard drive speed is one of the most overlooked specs. Sometimes it’s not even on the spec list! But it’s very important to have a fast hard drive. Most people think, “Oh, if I have a large hard drive my computer with run nice and fast.” Well, not so true. It’s important to have a “good sized” hard drive but it doesn’t affect the speed so much. If you max your hard drive up then you write information over what could be virtual memory (virtual memory is the part of the hard drive that works like ram). But that’s not a big threat because most new hard drives are at least 80GBs.

Laptops run from a battery, so you’re naturally going to want a long lasting one.

A slow hard drive won’t take up as much juice as one that’s fast. But if you have a slow one (I’m talking rpm’s) then you’ll have a slow computer. 4200 rpm’s is considered slow. If the laptop says, “low power consumption,” you can bet it has a 4200 rpm hard drive. The faster the hard drive spins, the faster the computer can read the information off of it and onto the ram. So having a lot of ram with a nice processor isn’t good enough. I mean, you’ll be able to launch as many programs as you want but they’ll all take FOREVER to finally load because the hard drive is so slow.

Now a medium hard drive speed would be considered 5400 rpms. And for a laptop hard drive that’s about the max you’ll find but for desktops (which you don’t really care how much power they suck up), they go up to about 7200 rpms (that’s really fast)!

Anyhow, I’m sure I’ve board you all to death!

LOL

I can’t really help you find a laptop unless I know what your budget is. Just remember you get what you pay for. And that’s especially true with computers! I wouldn’t spend less than $1,000 on a laptop. If you planned on only spending $800, then just wait. Save a little more money and spend the full $1,000.

I would recommend HP, Sony, or Dell.

If your budget is $1,500, I would probably recommend the HP BrightView. It’s running Vista Premium (way better than Vista Home).

Intel Core 2 Duo (T5500) processor

Built in 802.11a/b/g Wireless

Burns and plays DVDs and CDs

2GB of DDR2 ram

200GB hard drive

5400 RPMs

And an pretty good sized graphics card to run Vista’s Aero (GeForce Go 7600 with 256MB VRAM)

This laptop comes with a bunch of other cool things like a built in webcam and remote for watching movies, controlling PowerPoints, and just navigating through your computer. You can buy this laptop anywhere. I found it myself at Circuit City.

Anyhow I’ve said enough. Please comment if I’ve mis-communicated something or if you feel I’m flat out wrong!

Where were you when I was buying my laptop?

I spent about $600 and got a Dell B130 Inspiron. I've been pleased with everything EXCEPT for my battery - it doesn't hold a charge well at all AND after 1 year I've had to replace the motherboard. I'm glad that I've got the warranty.

I don't even mind, and you are sweet to take the time to help us out. Though, it seems you are really enjoying posting what you did.
You know, blog what you want. There's someone who wants to read it. (I think even Auntie and Coie would check-in anyway!!) ( ;
I love reading their blogs, and Auntie blogged several times about vomit, didn't she? I think even Coie did - and Amanda too!!
lol
So, just blog.
And, we don't need a super-sized, maxed-out laptop. We need one so I can do school and they can write and such on it. Like Amanda said, it would be nice to view movies on, too.
I really can't sit in this one room and make up curriculum or edit Jocelyn's novel, and we have 2 other pcs, but only 1 is online, b/c we need a modem for the other (didn't know that when we got it from my brother)... so, we have 5 of us who use the computers and only 2 pcs. That is mainly why we were looking at a laptop.. and it's mobility.
so, top-of-the-line around $1000.00 or so.
My grandparents have *surprisingly* offered to help pay for it, that's why we can afford that!!
Looks like you enjoyed your family day. Looks like an interesting place.

Dude, 2GB of RAM? I'm not sure that's necessary. My Gateway laptop has 1GB and it runs everything exceptionally well, and my HP desktop only has 300+ MB, and it's adequate for anything I've tried other than gaming.

The Gateway was only $650 and it has a great battery (it has 3 hours of life, which has been enough so far) and the RAM is fine for anything I've tried to do. The only thing it could use more of is graphics.

Of course, if you're gonna use Vista you'll need more RAM, but who needs Vista? :P

Did my mom leave you like the L-O-N-G-E-S-T comment on here??? LOL Yes, she likes your family, I think!!

I dunno if Amanda or mom answered you about the pc but, I will mostly be using it for writing... and mom is going to edit my novel so no gaming! I don't have time for that! LOL

• 2007-Feb-27 - Take a Look at These For Us..

Posted by FruitfulVineof7SoFar
Hi Paulie-
We so appreciate you looking that up for us, and we thought it looked great!!

I sent the link to my Dad...for some reason my Grma wants him to approve the laptop, even though he admittedly knows less than we do about such things!

So, I want you to check these out - if you don't mind, that is - or you want to have more fun looking!
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2853416&CatId=2289

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2860710&CatId=2289

They all have Dual-Core Processors, but 2 are Pentium and 1 is Centrino.

He sent me the link to a different Toshiba laptop that did not have the Dual-Core Processor, and I searched 'his site' and found these.
I really only want you to look at all 3, so if he sends me the links, we will already have asked you.

I looked at the tech info, and I think I can decipher the basics, but I thought you could look at them and know for sure.
LMK what you think.

Thank you again!

p.s. I'll try not to leave such long comments - errr... Jocelyn's comment, you know!! Although your Mom and Auntie know how hard it is for me to leave a short one, I'm sure! -sorry!

This is Ryann, I would have logged in but I never can.

I forgot to tell you on Monday, there's a really nice computer in Sam's Club. VERY nice DDR2 RAM.
I forgot how much RAM but I remember being shocked. Oh, this was also a desktop. I've been looking at desktops instead of laptops. I'm waiting for the price to go down on a couple of LT's, but for now, DT's are what I'm looking at. I really want an Apple, if I get anything.

Have you seen a Fry's in TN. I havn't seen one yet.

Also, are you going to English Country dancing on Friday?

Your Cousin,
Ryann

Of course, that means you need to post *something*! new!
Post about your most recent trips to the Homeschool conventions or meetings - or whatever...

Ok, I'll stop, b/c I don't want you to delete my comment. I looked for the one your Mom left you, and I didn't see it.....

So, MANY MANY THANKS!! for the suggestions on the laptop. I am typing on it presently!! We got a bundle deal, and went in and got it right at the store. They gave us what we saw online, except for one thing they didn't carry - they gave us something comparable, though. They *really* wanted our purchase!
So.... THANK YOU again...

Now, get a new post.....
Put up one with all of the nifty little "ads" you and your friends have made.. they are pretty neat!
