Homestead Kitchen Challenge

{ 08:56 , Wednesday, January 31, 2007 } { 9 comments } { Link }

For those of us whose cupboards are “filled to falling” (every time you open the pantry something falls out!) it is good to purge items every so often.  In the interest of frugality and organization, I have a de-cluttering challenge for everyone (I include myself).

This week, I am using ONLY ingredients on hand to cook dinner.  Because I have so much, I am being more strict for myself, but for everyone else, here are -

“The Rules”:

{     This is a six-day challenge (sometimes we aren’t home to use up stuff, or we have too many leftovers), beginning tonight.

{     You must use at least five ingredients you have on hand for the entire meal (salt, pepper and water do NOT count LOL).  Dessert and beverage counts!

{     Flour, Sugar, etc. do count as long as you have used at least three other Non-baking supplies.

{     At least one ingredient per meal must be canned (home canned or otherwise…doesn’t matter) or box/bagged (macaroni, rice, beans…).  Remember the goal is to clear out the cupboards a bit.

{     Perishables, like milk, are allowed to be purchased because they don’t stay around long (unless you have instant, of course).

{     Post your list of ingredients and the menu on your blog (comment to me, so I can find it and read it LOL)

{     Note:  If you run out of ingredients before the week is out, GO SHOPPING!  That means you aren’t a hoarder like me LOL

I started a few days ago and made curried chicken (from leftover chicken).  Last night I made a wonderful bean and bacon soup, homemade biscuits and banana bread (Nobody will eat bananas around here unless they are nearly green).

TONIGHT:

From my pantry:

Canned Green Beans

French Fried Onions

Cream of chicken soup

Fresh Sweet taters

Frozen deer meat

(technically not in the pantry, but, still, it is on hand)

(Flour, sugar, oil, butter…etc)

Menu:

Green Bean Casserole

Sweet potato Biscuits

Deer meat

Sweet potato Pie

I'm in!! I soooo need to do this, it will be a great opportunity to get my pantry weeded out and replace it with my "just in case" pantry in the garage. That way I can replenish that one...gotta keep things moving!!!!

i like the sound of this! Have to break one of the rules though...I don't can anything so I'll just have to use the rest of the things in my pantry. I'll start tomorrow!

Count me in. This is wonderful! Until the 9th, I have a total of about $30 to spend on food, but I'm a hoarder, so that's okay. :)
So this is much needed encouragement for the next week! :)
Ashley

You can also count me in on this

I will be starting tomorrow and like Catherine I also have not gotten around to being able to can foods yet.
This will be good and I have so much stuff to use up in my fridge.

A few weeks back when we had extra money, I stocked up on many things. I bought cases of can goods and a freezer of meat. I haven't been shopping for food in a while. So this should be easy, if I can just remember to post it everyday. lol

We are on the same page with you. In the interest of frugality - and frankly just to see if we can do it - we will be using what we have onhand for the whole month of February. At least that's the plan... So we are with you for the week - had leftovers tonight, will post menu tomorrow. Good luck and look forward to seeing how creative everyone gets!
