By noon he had been down the gulch to pick blackberries twice, climbed a tree, scraped about quarter cup of tree sap off “For my collection”
, made a stepping stone from leftover cement, ridden his bike 15 times up to the stop sign and back, played video games and thrown the ball for the dog.
He’s staying until Wednesday evening, so I have no idea what I will do with him for the remaining twenty-eight hours.
Thankfully, my husband has arrived from work and has taken the little guy on another bike ride and more berry picking.
During one of the video game stints, my little towhead sat next to his cousin so she could help him. He told me it was nice to have a cousin who wasn’t mean like his sisters!
I asked how his older brother, who is fifteen, treats him. He said “Well, he isn’t mean to me but all he does is watch TV and go to his girlfriend’s house.” He was silent for a bit then told me, in all seriousness, “I’m probably going to have a girlfriend soon. Next year, when I‘m nine.”
He has a girl in mind, named Sandi. “She’s pretty. We don’t like to do very much of the same things. Except play handball. A lot.” All of this delivered in his oddly husky voice, hands in pockets as he leans casually against the arm of my couch.
He is an entertaining little guy, and I heartily wish they were all so easy.
