Yipee!
I go out to my garden today to check for green bean sprouts. It’s been nine days since I replanted, but I see no sign of them. But wait! What’s this? By golly, it is a green bean sprout (it’s not where I originally planted it, but that’s OK!). It’s been hidden by the corn. I am so excited.
They may not actually produce anything, since I planted them so very late, but I am happy that I can grow them. LOL It has been a learning experience and any thing else will just be a bonus.
My corn is only about 2 feet tall; it’s a smaller variety, but not that small! My pumpkin plants are large and look like they are growing properly. My sunflowers are not even a foot tall yet. I expected them to be in line with the corn, so I don’t have high (high…LOL…get it?) expectations from them.
And now little tiny green bean plants. I heave a contented sigh.
Now some might wonder how I can be pleased with such an inefficient garden. I knew nothing starting out, so anything I did was half expected to fail. I just told myself “I am learning.” And, I have learned:
1. To start earlier in the year!
2. Pay attention to where I plant (my little garden is too close to the cherry tree and gets less sunlight than it needs.
3. Take your time preparing the soil because it will be easier to plant, less weeds to pull and better growth!
4. Inoculate the green beans.
5. Plant the corn a little deeper
6. Don’t plant the green beans too deep.
7. Use snail deterrent before they eat your plants.
8. Use a drip hose so that you don’t wash your seeds into the gully (that’s the likely reason I have squash growing outside the garden proper.
9. Give them plenty of water
Next year, in addition to the above, I plan to have compost mixed in. I am also going to learn about mulching and cover crops and have all proper tools available from the start!
Thanks for letting me ramble on…my little success is a big deal LOL

We all make mistakes with this area. I made some this year and last. The ones I made last year helped with this years planting. I thought I was good to go this spring, but alas, more mistakes were made. Well live and learn!!! Thats how we become pros at something i guess.
Have a blessed day and be very proud of your little garden. I put many things in the freezer and on the table with my little patch of garden.

*sigh* I was soooo worried that we were going to move this summer that I only planted 5 tomatoe plants. And I made a mistake and planted them near an elm tree. Elm tree = shade. I got a handful of tomatoes. BIG lesson learned. It happens even when you know better! *blushes* I like to say, it's important not only to know "what to do" but also, "what not to do". lol
