Collins Country

Slowly but surely they grow!

My little beans are finally poking their heads out!  I was really worried that I had accidentally “weeded” them, not knowing what they look like.  A nice friend told me it would be obvious (When they come up, they are still wearing their shell like a little hat - so cute).

For some reason, the only place they are sprouting is in the one mound where there is no corn.  According to the garden plans I’ve read about the Three Sisters gardens, they are supposed to grow well together.  Maybe they are just slower because they are sharing the same soil patch?

I counted all my little plants.  I have 20 corns, twelve pumpkins and 4 beans (plants, not fruits).  I also have 7000 weeds, but who cares about that!

I wish weeds had more practical uses…it would be the easiest garden you could grow.  Just go out and look at them.  They will spread more if you weed them, of course! LOL

I am now researching winter crops.  I think that’s the things you plant in fall to grow in winter.  Or is it things you plant in winter to grow in spring?  Anybody want to clear that up for me? LOL

I want to grow some lettuce and Asparagus (It is so expensive to buy Asparagus at the market-in off season it can get up to $3.00 per bunch.  YIKES).  Today, I will go online and begin my quest.  This time, my DH must help me prepare the soil.  I can’t bring myself to hack it away like last time.  I need his big muscles for the job (I’ll help!).

I wish we could get some sunshine around here.  For the past couple of weeks it has been foggy most days, until noon-ish, and then mostly cloudy the rest of the day until the fog rolls in again.  The price you pay for North coast living among the lush ferns and evergreens, I guess!

It’s up to us, so make today a GREAT day!

Lisa said she does really well with lettuce in the winter. I know nothing about it! lol
The man who BBQ's is at Fortuna's market, which is Tuesdays from 3-6. I also saw him at Rio Dell's market. Maybe he will be at Ferndale's too. I think he comes from down South, like Cloverdale?!
