Grain Question

4:53 PM, Tuesday, February 5, 2008 .. Posted in Random Ramblings .. 6 comments .. Link

For those of you who buy whole grains in bulk.  Where do you purchase them?  I am looking for a good source to order wheat and perhaps other grains from.  I bought the last bags from Whole Foods Market, but would like to order online and have it delivered if possible.  Driving 75 miles one way to buy grain is a bit much these days!

Also, do any of you run a food co-op?  If you have info. on starting and maintaining one, a good place to order from, what NOT to do , etc.... I would be grateful for any input!  You can either post a comment, send me a private message, or an email.

Blessings,

Catherine

my local grocery store has a "family food storage"sale once a year - and I buy large 6-gal buckets of grains and beans there.
I have also been known to get those buckets at bluechipgroup.net - the same place my local grocery store gets theirs. but I live in a place where the dominant religion believes in having a year's supply of food stored away for emergencies, either weather-related or natural disaster or job-related, etc.
the health food stores (like Wild Oats) around here can also custom order grains and I can pick them up there - that is where I got my soft white wheat.

Walton Feed and The Urban Homemaker both sell and ship the big buckets or bags of wheat. I'd really try to find a co-op in your area because shipping for a bucket/bag is huge. Pretty much doubles the cost of the wheat. Of course, that depends on where you live, too. We just happen to be about as far from both places as you can possibly be. :)

I found this out at simplelifemoms blog she said you can do a search at http://www.greenpeople.org/searchNaturalFoodStores.cfm and find a coop in your area. I tryed it and found one in my area. I am really excited I hope to buy from local organic farmers. There is a lot of good stuff on that site.
I hope that is of some help to you.

Wheat "Dealer"

My DH laughs at me when I go to meet my "wheat dealer" in the parking lot of a Starbucks. Unfortunately she is in the Kentuckiana Area. I found her by asking other local women who grind their own wheat. I pray you find a dealer soon. She is sooooo much cheaper than whole foods or online, I pay $18 for 50 lbs.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. ladies! I guess I'll be taking a trip to Austin soon...closest co-op is there, and so is Whole Foods Market. Maybe I'll just have to plan a quarterly trip to the co-op and Whole Foods.....until I find the time/place/energy/help to start one here ;) .
Thanks again,
Catherine :)

I would suggest buying new, not used, 5 gallon food grade buckets (several places to get them: one is Beprepared.com) and then making one trip a year for your dried goods. Grain stores forever in sealed containers. I put bay leaves on my grains, unbleached flours, corn/cornmeal etc then seal the lid and have never had any problem with bugs. You'll just have to be creative on where you store your buckets if you don't have a large pantry. Also if you store them on concrete make sure you put a board between the concrete and the first bucket you set down.
