PRODUCT PLUNDER OF THE WEEK:
SPLENDA GOES TO COURT
A federal court has rejected a request for summary judgment in a lawsuit launched by the Sugar Association against Splenda. The plaintiff alleges Splenda, a Johnson & Johnson company, is falsely advertising to consumers with its marketing slogan "Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar". Splenda is the synthetic compound sucralose, discovered in 1976 by scientists in Britain seeking a new pesticide formulation. The artificial sweetener is made by replacing hydroxyl groups in the sugar molecule with chlorine. There are no long-term studies of the side effects of Splenda in humans. The manufacturer's own short-term studies showed that sucralose caused shrunken thymus glands and enlarged livers and kidneys in rodents. But in this case, the FDA decided that because these studies weren't based on human test animals, they were not conclusive. As a result, Splenda is now one of the most ubiquitous ingredients in low calorie processed foods.

 I've always wondered what that stuff was... I'm still not sure, but I do know that I don't want to consume anything that was discovered while seeking to create a pesticide!  YUCK.  I'll stick to raw honey, thank you very much.

I'm with you! my family knows that we are very particular about foods that we eat and allow our children. so, in their minds, this translates to "but it is sugar-free" or "fat-free" this or that. I would rather the kids have the full-sugar root beer than the artificially sweetened junk. my family all think that because it does not have SUGAR, it is healthier. not that I am incredibly happy about the sugar, but grandma's house will be grandma's house, and if you have to go, you have to allow some special treats......

Thank you so much. I believe it 100%..I used to drink my coffee with 2 splendas but I stopped a couple of months ago and started using stevia and consequently my kidney and bladder achiness is gone. Just gone. Didn't know why it ever started in the first place and of course have no concrete medical proof that that's what caused my achiness in the first place but I think it's more than a coincidence that they happened simultaneously.

See, this makes me so mad. As a diabetic I have very few choices in this matter. It's a no win situation for me. I can't have the sugar or the honey (which is my fav, but the highest in carbs) so I have to use a substitute. I did use Splenda for a while but there was to much controversary around it so I went back to Sweet N Low. I guess I'm just doomed! lol........Kitty
