Borage for Bees

6:43 AM, Thursday, March 2, 2006 .. Posted in Organic Gardening .. 4 comments .. Link

To attract bees to your garden, plant the herb Borage.  Bees love the tiny blue flowers and will help increase your yield of fruits and veggies.

You will love the Borage, too- pick the flowers and toss them in your salads for a beautiful and tasty treat.

Some other herbs that will attract bees to your garden are:

Basil

Bergamot

Catnip

Chamomile

Fennel

Germander

Hyssop

Lavender

Lemon Balm

Marjoram

Mint Marigold

Mint

Oregano

Salvia

Thyme

In the middle ages, knights would drink tea made of borage before they rode off to do battle. It was known as the "courage plant".

Just thought I would share that.

Hi Catherine,

I haven't grown Borage for a few years now so you just reminded me of another herb I should plant this year. The young leaves can also be tossed into salads...they have a slight cucumber taste. And we also used to "sugar" the flowers and use as cake decorations or float in lemonade.

It's nice to see you back and writing again. Are you all settled in now? And did you find that lost key. ;-)

Anne,

Thanks! Yes, I'm just about settled in- if I could just find room for all these books I'd be finished ;) ! No... I never did find my keys :( ..... Oh, well.

I am so excited about a new herb bed this spring. I will have to have borage added to the plan. I have planned most of the other bee herbs you mentioned.
