Critters....ICK!!!

Warning, the last part of this post is not for little ones' eyes!!!

OK, those of you who have lived the "country life" longer than this silly woman, go ahead and laugh.....

but we have SCORPIONS......lots of them, wayyyyyyy too many of them, aaaccckkkkk!!!!!!!

We've killed at least 8 in the past month.  I killed one yesterday (in the kitchen no less), and dh killed another one last night (also in the kitchen).  This is not a good thing for the "Barefoot Mama" that I am.  Putting on shoes before I stumble into the kitchen at 4:45 a.m. to make coffee is almost as appalling as the thought of actually stepping on one of those monsters!

I think they have a whole family living under the back deck.  At least that's where the latest two scooted when I was watering and rearranging my containers.  Ooohhhhh!!!!  They are ugly creatures!

Oh, that's not all....when I slid my potted Myrtle over... I squished a sticky lizard.  Yuucckkk!!!!   I had to get a stick, and finally resort to a knife, to poke him down thru the cracks in the deck.  That was disgusting.  Maybe the scorpions will eat him.  For those who don't live in my household and already know about my phobia of "sticky lizards"... they're  Geckos.  Those sticky little feet and pinky clear bodies just creep me out!  While I was squealing as I poked  the icky thing down to its' grave, Sarah called out, "What's wrong Mom?" thru the kitchen window.  After I told her, I  heard the usual sighs, snorts, and giggles from the 3 sisters.  I didn't see any eyes rolling, but I know they did that, too.

We also have quite the assortment of spiders.    I wonder if they eat scorpions?  Nah.  The scorpions are way bigger than any spiders I've seen around here.  I don't really mind the spiders, at least the ones I've seen.  I do not like tarantulas, that's another story, though.  Cana does not like these seemingly harmless creatures at all, especially since they seem to hang out in the girls' bathroom most of the time.

Another icky and sad story from our house this week....

Barn Swallows are nesting on the front porch.  Yesterday something knocked 3 of the eggs out of the nest and they all cracked and killed the itty bitty birdies.  That was so sad.  And of course, I  had to go out there and move them off the porch.  Ick.  The bird is still sitting in the nest, so I hope she has at least one egg left in there.

One last critter tidbit....this one isn't funny at all, though and NOT FOR CHILDREN TO READ.

Less than 2 miles down the road from our house there's a big sign in a front yard.  I saw it a few days ago, but could only make out the word DANGER (dh was driving a bit too fast for me to read the rest).  On the return trip I told him to slow down so I could read the sign.....Danger S*x Offender Child Molester Lives Here.  That critter needs to stay far, far, away.

Things like these make me wonder if maybe being the "Urban Homestead Mama" is more my speed.  We did have spiders, sticky lizards and swallows  in the urban homestead....  but NOT scorpions!

Just to even think about a scorpian makes me squirm. And I wonder if that sign is supposed to be posted, or a sick joke? Either way...I'm thankful to be out in the country. Hope all stays well!
