Herbs for Shady Areas

Shade.  Lots of shade is what I have :(  .....

So, I did a bit of research and found a list of herbs for "Full-Shade Areas" in my favorite gardening book- Southern Herb Growing

Dead Nettle

Foxglove

Lady's Mantle

Lemon Balm

Pennyroyal

Sweet Woodruff

Violets

If you have "High-shade Areas" (morning and/or afternoon sun), these are the recommended herbs:

Bergamot

Burnet

Corsican Mint

Golden Marjoram

Lovage

Mints

Parsley

Pennyroyal

Rosemary

Tarragon

I was excited to see some of my favorites on both lists .  From the Full-shade list I'm definitely going to plant Lemon Balm, Sweet Woodruff and Violets.  I already have Violas which are doing wonderfully in the shade.

From the other list I have 2 large Rosemaries which are actually doing quite well thus far.  I purchased Spearmint, Curly Mint and Pineapple Mint this weekend, too.  My little shade garden is going to be fun I think.  Still need to find some sunshine somewhere for other things, though......

Shade growing

That sounds GREAT! I am BY FAR no expert, but in my own looking and listening about growing herbs, EVERYONE I've spoken to has told me that it would be wise to plant any mint in a seperate container because they are apt to take over everything in the garden.

Hope that helps.

I love Lemon Verbena. It is a very hardy and great smelling herb for partial shade. I sometime find it at local nurseries. But it is a bit hard to come by. If you get a chance to try it, do so, and let me know what you think of it!
