Saying Goodbye to a fellow gardener

8:21 AM, Tuesday, July 11, 2006 .. Posted in Random Ramblings .. 4 comments .. Link

My husband's grandmother passed away Sunday evening.  She was a dear lady, and a fellow gardener.  She was quite an interesting woman, and told me the most fascinating stories sometimes.  My husband was often suprised by the things she shared with me!  She was 90 years old, so she had lots of years of living to tell about.  Hers was not an easy life; but she was always cheerful and pleasant to be around.  At least with me, I've heard Grandma had quite a temper and was quick to put someone in their place.  Glad I missed that part of her personality

She grew the most beautiful roses I've ever seen.  I'm not sure what she did to them, but they were huge.  She was definitely not an organic gardener- I once watched her squirt WD-40 on the ants in the garden .  She was known to use other things like gasoline on them, too!

She did use some of the gardening methods from her native american ancestors.  My husband says he remembers her burying fish in the garden to fertilize, which I've read about in books.  Not something I'd like to try, but it must have worked because everyone remembers Grandma's awesome vegetable gardens.

She was also an animal lover and treated her pets like members of the family.  She often seemed to know what they were "saying" and talked to them just like she would one of us.

She will be dearly missed, but I know she's now in heaven with her Lord and someday we'll see her again!
