Deer-proofing the Garden ???

8:13 AM, Wednesday, August 20, 2008 .. Posted in Organic Gardening .. 2 comments .. Link

Hi guys!

Just popping in quickly with a question or two for you...

Any simple methods for deer-proofing the garden, other than the obvious fencing???  I want to plant a few veggies in what will in the future be my herb and flower beds this Fall, and it isn't really an area that can be fenced right away.  I know there are some plants that the deer don't like...will planting those help keep them away from the more tasty ones?

Thanks for your input!  I love watching the deer graze; but I'd rather not watch them graze on my garden !

Blessings,

Catherine

Spreading hair clippings around the perimeter and using horse manure. Apparently deer don't like those scents and will avoid the garden. We use horse manure and haven't had trouble with deer this year. Also, folks around here will tie Wal-Mart bags or metal pie tins around the perimeter to shoo away the deer as well.

There are a couple of products that you can buy that we have had luck with, one called Liquid Fence and the other is Shot Gun they come in a spray bottle; they both smell awful but they do keep away the deer and rabbits. The are natural products that are not supposed to be harmful to your plants and vegetables, We have used them for several years.
