Fruit Fly Trap

Last week I went to Lisa's http://www.homesteadblogger.com/NewHarvestHomestead Titus2 meeting (yes, I am so lucky!) and she shared with us something that she saw, in of all things, a Martha Stewart magazine!  No, Lisa does not subscribe, but her mother-in-law is nice enough to give them to her :)

I thought I would share it since it is such a wonderful idea!  Thanks Lisa (and Martha)!

A Fruit Fly Trap!

Put about a 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in a bottle or jar, and top with a paper cone with a small opening at the end that points to the vinegar.  The fruit flies are attracked to the vinegar and once they fly down into the cone and into the bottle they can't get out!

I read that you can also use plastic wrap over a jar of vinegar with 4-5 small holes in it and it should work in the same way.

A Few Fun Facts About Fruit Flies:

- Can lay up to 500 eggs at a time
- Their entire lifecycle is complete in about a week
- While considered mainly a pest, they have the potential to contaminate food with dangerous bacteria

i read something here and it worked when tried - place a ripe piece of fruit in your oven and leave door open slightly overnight. when you wake up, close the door immediatly and turn on oven to 400 for 15 minutes. fruit flies all gone - toasted!

This works!

We always have a problem with fruit flies in autumn and have been using this method (vinegar in bottle with cone) for the past couple of years. The only problem is that it doesn't get ALL the fruit fries. We have 2 bottles in our kitchen and still have MANY flies - Arghhh!!

As a funny side note I read this quote yesterday: "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like bananas" ~ Groucho Marx
