The Start of a Journey

11:55, Monday, July 16, 2007 .. Posted in God Breezes .. 2 comments .. Link
I just got off the phone with my brother who has been living in France for the last 9 months or so.  I have been re-reading a book entitled, French Women Don't Get Fat.  I wanted to ask him some questions regarding  food and about the cultural differences here in America vs. those in Europe, Mexico and actually any other culture than here.

The number one difference we both agreed on is that most Americans place far to much importance on things, than on the quality of life.  For instance, in regards to food.  He said seafood is a large part of their diet, and I commented how it is pricey, but he said they would rather spend their money on good food than on the 'stuff' we spend our money on.    He said most people have a small garden, they eat mostly whole foods.  They don't have a lot of huge supermarkets, they have a baker, a butcher, a fish monger.  They don't eat a lot processed food.

Another difference and more sinister is the how the media has such a big, and negative influence on family morals and values here in America.  I honesty believe it will be (if it's not already) the downfall of our country.
I am honestly thinking hard about canceling cable, I know it will miss watching certain shows, but I have really had it!  Besides, most good shows are available for rent or purchase on DVD.  TV is an idol, time waster and an evil influencer!  Why do we love it so much?!

He said in Europe, and I noticed this in Mexico also, that they take time to enjoy life, good food, long conversations over the table, spending time with friends, and family.  I think it used to be like that here too, but more and more, especially here in California, it isn't that way....people are selfish, too busy, always running around.  We work harder to try and pay for all the junk that we spend our money on and get in debt over, it's ridiculous really.  I know not everyone is this way, but this is what the trend is, this is the majority.

I am a huge waster of money!  It makes me sick.  I like to have a pretty house with pretty things, I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but I don't need to spend as much as I do.  I could be more careful and take the time to shop for bargains, make things, etc...  I could be a lot more conscientious with our budget, how we are spending our time, what we are filling out hearts and minds with.  The importance of these things is being lost to the mindless, depraved, and commercialized media driven culture.  Why do we bow down to it?  It is satan's plan and I'm sure he is thrilled!

Well, my goal is to try and put all this thought into action, this is the hard part!  I am going to start with a conversation with my husband tonight about canceling cable, well, maybe after Little People Big World and Hell's Kitchen....God help me!!!  This will be one of the hardest!

My plans also include changes in these areas:
Spiritual Life (I had a light bulb moment at church this past Sunday that I am excited about)
Food
Activity
Money
Relationships

I will be posting on our progress and the changes, however small.  One step at a time.  I know it will be a process and it won't happen over-night, but I know it has to be done for our spiritual, mental, and physical health!

I want to hear...

MORE about the lightbulb moment.

I know what you mean about our culture, although I am not sure I want to emulate France either.

I know that when we seek the Kingdom of God first, all the other things are added unto us. Whether that means we get all we need, get what we want, or that our desires change - I don't know. I just know it will be GOOD! LOL

Have a great day.

Patti

.....It's not really French culture I want to emulate, it is the idea of slowing down, remembering what is important, God, friends, family and enjoying life because we have joy from a deep trust in God. The light bulb moment had to do with trust in God. I will tell you more later.....

We Can Relate

Hey Cindee!

We also have been seriously discussing dumping TV. It is so much money and for what - serious anti-American propaganda Mind Control! I am really sick of it. There are only a few shows we watch now (includings Hells Kitchen), time is coming closer to simply pulling the plug.

Hope all is well with you guys up there!
