Duck Advice?

08:12, Monday, June 18, 2007 .. Posted in Critters .. 3 comments .. Link

Today we are going to go pick up a couple baby ducks from the feed store.  We own chickens, but never ducks.  I have read the duck section of the Carla Emery book, but would appreciate any advice.

Can I keep them with the chickens at night?  How big should they be? We have raccoons, skunks and possums, the dogs help keep them out, but I would worry about the ducks being out all night.

If we use a kiddy pool for the ducks would it be safe out in the yard with the chickens?  Could the chickens jump in it and drown?

I know these probably seem like silly questions, but I am pretty clueless!  Any advice on shelter, food, etc. would be great!  Thanks!

You can definitely keep your ducks and chickens together. We have for years. Chickens can drown in a pool but get the one that is about 4-5 inches deep. The ducks can swim and chickens can stand in it. Make sure you put a little ramp to get out of it as well as in it. Our chickens and ducks freerange during the day but we lock them up at night. Our ducks eat the same cruble as the chickens. They really like brown banana peels. It is very important to make sure they have fresh drinking water. When you clean out the pool they swim in you can use that water on plants. It is high in nitrogen and really help plants grow big. We keep our ducks in the brooder box until they are feathered. I hope I have been helpful!

Well....our Muscoveys sit out all night together under the tree in the chicken pasture....
we have large wading pool in the pasture for them, the chickens have the same access to it as they have....and we find the chickens sitting on the edge all the time.
