Let's go be Amish!

10:15, Monday, March 12, 2007 .. Posted in God Breezes .. 8 comments .. Link
When I was a teen I was rebellious and was into punk and the blue hair and all (it was the 80's).  Anyway my friend and I used to always say, "Let's go be Amish!"  There was something appealing about the simple lifestyle, an escape from the world we where living in.

Lately I sometimes think the same, "Let's go be Amish!"
Pornography and homosexuality are being shoved down our throats by the immoral, liberal media.  I am feeling like it is seeping into our lives like a thick, black, evil fog.  No, it's almost like carbon monoxide poisoning, it's slowly killing us and most of the time we don't even realize it, we get desensitized.

We went to the mall yesterday and it just made me feel sick.  Of course there is the blatant pornography at Victoria's Secret, but there are the other stores.... I NEVER go into Spencer gifts, the only time I went in their since they opened in our mall was to complain about their pornographic calendars placed outside their door in full view of all who passed by.
Well, yesterday my son wanted a poster for his room of Pirates of the Caribbean.  We had forgot to look for one when we where at Target, so I was thinking Spencer's might have one.....I walked into that store and felt such an overwhelming oppression, that I had to quickly turn around and go right back out!  It was scary!  Seriously!
Then we went over to a record store, another place I avoid, I've been in there twice.  I was looking through the posters and was SHOCKED at the NAKED pictures of women!  I would expect some swimsuit pictures, but not the kind of pictures I saw!  I quickly made a remark to one of the clerks, "You know there is pornography in here right?"
"Yeah"
"I don't see any kind of warnings stating this should be for adults only"
"No, this is a pornographic industry you know."
"Any child could walk in here and see these pictures!"
Then I get a shrug. "We have to put the pictures up."
Then I said, "You could at least cover certain parts on the display poster!"
Then the manager comes by, "We would get fined by the company if we did that."
"So nobody stands up for what is right anymore?!"
Again I get the shrug.  He did offer up a phone number of the company which I took down. (Trans World Entertainment 1-800-540-1242)

It got me thinking.  If more people DID speak up it wouldn't be as bad as it has gotten.  We just let it happen.  As a Christian it is hard to know what to do.  We know that the world is becoming worse and worse, but what IS our responsibility?  I'm not sure.  I will continue to speak up when I feel I should.  I will also will no longer give these stores my business.

I will also continue to shelter my children from this stuff as much as I can.  I couldn't help but think of all those parents who let their children wander the mall....it just makes me sick.  It is things like this that make me want to go be Amish.  Do you know what I mean?

I watched an excellent movie recently called, Time Changer, I HIGHLY recommend you watch it as a family, and tell people at church to watch it too, it is really eye opening and convicting!

I hate taking my children out anywhere too. We are so forced with pornography and evil that it just seeps from any opening that we, as parents may happen to leave unguarded for one second. (And even some we don't!)
God bless you for taking a stand against this mess!

A great post.....I will agree with you the Time Changer is a great movie, and all of my boys enjoyed it.
We do not go to the mall very often but when I do I always am shocked at some of the store window displays.

Thanks

Oh lordy I would love to "go be amish" as you say and for all the same reasons as you have said. This world is nuts. I hate to even watch the news now days. It is just too sad.

Ugliness Everywhere!

I so agree with you...evil, ugly things abound everywhere we look. The pornographic nature of our society is sickening.

I live in Boise, Idaho, what I would call a family-friendly, middle American, conservative kind of town. It is a college town (Boise State Univ.), but it's certainly not San Francisco or Las Vegas. So, imagine my surprise last summer when I drove down on one of the main drags by the college (also a main drag into downtown) and I came upon a condom store!!! I don't remember now what the name was, The Big O, I think, but the sign said "Boise's, first and only condom store.) I don't know how things like that get approved in the first place. Needless to say, I make it a point to avoid that road.

And also, it's not just the world, but the church as well. About a year and a half ago, we were led of the Lord to leave a church. We left for many reasons, one of which was the fact that my husband and our teenage son had to guard their eyes more on Sundays than any other day during the week (we homeschool). The low-cut blouses and tight jeans or super short skirts did not create an atmosphere that was conducive to worship. We have taken alot of flack for wanting to shelter our children so much, but I see sheltering as a positive thing.

Amazing

ya know, remember back when we couldn't see an ad on tv for bra's or femine products? Now the ads on tv are well.. in our face!

sad statement on the condition of our world :(

Thankfully we have a choice to participate or live better :)

I agree!

I loved that movie, by the way!

Like you, I am often unsure what I should to do. I am going to address that particular issue. Thanks for the info.

Nevie told me that they sell pornography there, but the movies and stuff are covered so you can't see the pictures. I was appalled that my 15 year knew that! But, grateful that she is grossed out by it!

Thanks for posting this!!

I didn't realize about those stores. I never go to the mall. I'm glad to have the warning. I know what you mean about what to do. It is one of the reasons I want to do without TV. Just because of commercials. We don't turn it on anymore until they are in bed. eventually it is going bye-bye completely. I just have to work on my husband a bit longer. I'm praying. The first thing we must do it protect our kids. They need to know there is evil out there, but they don't need to see it all the time. I like how you spoke up to the store people, I'm not sure I would have thought of it, but I will now when I see stuff like that. I"ve never seen that movie, but we will check it out!

Oh I do understand!

I too am saddened by the events that are transpiring in our world today...... but remember that the Lord knew that these things would come to pass and we truly are living in the last days........ these are truly signs of the times, and I do believe that as the Lord's return is closer, the world will become more wicked.......it's up to us to teach and train our children to discern and see the difference between the good and the bad......

Blessings,
