A Fun Book
I received the coolest book from my very good friend for my birthday last month. It is called, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management. It was published in 1859. Isabella Beeton was born in London in 1836, the daughter of a dry-goods trader. She married in 1857 to a publisher, she wrote columns on cooking and fashion, and began work on the book in 1857. She had four children, two who died during infancy, and at the young age of 28 she died of an infection contracted during the delivery of her fourth child.
I am amazed at the amount of information in her book, and how differently they lived back then! Also how well informed she was at such a young age!
It is meant for the Victorian middle-class in Europe, and instructs on everything from fashion, child-care, and the management of servants, to cooking all kinds of dishes, it has many recipes, some things strange and that I have never heard of!
Anyway, it is a very entertaining book! It is out of print, but can be purchased through Oxford World's Classics.
