THE WORD OF GOD SERIES BY CANDY FOOTE
HItting the Junk Stores
On Friday, my eldest daughter, my father, and I spent the day shopping in a town about an hour drive from here. (Although, it takes me a good hour and a half!)
We had a great time!
Our first stop; the Salvation Army.
We found some good deals. I was really excited to find two movies of real live volcano footage! I love how I am blessed to always find something that goes right along with what we are studying at school! Last fall I found two huge books filled with art prints of Vincent Van Gogh's. We, of course, bought a game. I can't go in there without bringing home a game. This time it was electronical battleship. I picked up a pair of black levis for my husband, brand new recipe cards, and a new joke book. (The kids love making their own recipe books, and I'm tired of hearing the same jokes from the books we have!)
While driving around town looking for a Joanne Fabrics for my daughter, we found another
"junk store". I was so excited! I love junkin'!!!
Dad and I went into the thrift shop, while Jaimie hit the fabric store.
I found a beautiful silver Revere Ware tea kettle for .99, a GeoSafari talking globe for $1.99, and a riding rocking horse for $2.99, and I really splurged by buying myself a new purse at $1.99/ buy one/get one free!
I bought my three youngest sons cowboy hats for Christmas for 3 for $1.00! And my favorite thing, I found a Bible storybook that looked like one my brother had when he was little. They gave it to me for free!
Everything looked new!
I love hitting the junk stores!

I buy some stuff at the Salvation Army in our nearest big town also. But we have run into the problem of my daughters class mates asking her what store she got something at. Sooo we have come up with a name for the Salvation Army. Sally's. ( It is a unique botique she tells them.) She is not really lying and it saves her alot of grief. Just thought I would share. I am not embarrased about Junkin as you put it but kids can be so cruel to other kids.

I love "junking" too! I am not too impressed with our Goodwill stores here in Texas and I have yet to find a Salvation Army store but I have found some second-hand stores, antique stores and I find my best bargains at yard sales. My youngest son and I went to about a dozen sales this past Sat. and it was cold here in Texas, 45 and windy. I spent 10.50 and here is some of the stuff we came away with- 2 nerf rocket launchers with 8 large rockets, a small basket full of bouncey balls(he loves them and has a collection :), 6 music CD's for my oldest son, a pampered chef apple peeler-corer, a pampered chef cake decorating kit, a basket with leather handles, a brand new package of paper cups, a stuffed dog for our real dog, he tends to rip the stuffing out of them. I got 2 pairs of caprice pants, a pair of swimming trunks, two hand towels and 7 t-shirts. I love going and I have learned that Ionly need to buy things you think you will use or others that you may know have a need. I used to get so caught up in finding a bargain that I would buy it whether I needed it or not and in the end it usually turned out that I didn't need it or use it so I wasted money. I also started a wish list at the begining of the season, with sizes of all the kids and things I was looking for for the house, school ect. For example, one year my oldest son wanted ice skates so I had his size and kept my eyes open and we ended up finding them. A list helps me not to forget and keeps me on track. (ok most of the time :)
Well, thanks for sharing your bargains, I love hearing about it.

I love it! I love to go to the junk stores too! My mom always called thrift stores "junk stores" and so I have always done so as well. I thought I was the only one besides my mom who referred to them as that! That's Great!!!
Blessings,
Miki

Hi
I went shopping an hour from here last week, mostly for food. I have been food shopping on my own for 1 year now since my youngest went to preschool. My eldest is nearly 19.
We have been blessed in these stores this year. A few weeks ago ds16 came home with an umbrella. I used it yesterday and it was wonderful at school, three of us could fit under it.
I have added...
your name to my friends list too.
