THE WORD OF GOD SERIES BY CANDY FOOTE
Pantry
I have been busy building up my pantry again.
When we were preparing to move, I gave most of the food that I had stored to our mission outreach.
That brings me to this post.
What is your reason for stocking a pantry?
I have heard many Christians say that they are preparing a pantry in order to take better care of their families.
That's a good and noble cause, but personally, I believe we should have a higher goal.
Our family is always praying and searching for people to bless. We do this when we have a lot and when we have a little. Giving should be a Christians nature.
I love having a stocked pantry! It makes life so much easier. I love being able to take care of my family. I want to be prepared for whatever life brings.
But, I want to always have a higher goal than just taking care of me and mine.
I believe that hard times are not only here, but worse times are coming for this world. It is the Christians responsibility to be there for others - to let our light shine by meeting real needs.
(The government has been doing the churches job for too long!)
Joseph did not just prepare his own family for coming disaster!
The point being, Joseph did prepare, but it wasn't simply for his own family.
Luke 12:16-21
And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, "What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded form you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Storing up our pantries is not a bad thing in itself.
My question is what is your purpose for storing up your pantry?

I have to admit that our large pantry and freezer at first was to have a nice sized pantry of food for our family. I do love to be able to go to the pantry for our needs instead of to the store each time.
But in the past few years, we have been able to help 3 different family with their food needs. We were called by a dear friend who said I didn't want to ask anyone for help, but we have 1 pound of sausage in the house for breakfast and then we have nothing to eat and no money to buy anything else. We were able to take them a whole car trunk full of food from our pantry and freezer and not cause a dent in our pantry and freezer goods! I was so glad we were able to help!!!
God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

Candy,
I absolutely agree! We live on a large farm and plant several large gardens each year, but like you, not only with the thought of stocking our own pantry and freezer, but to be able to bless others by giving it away. While we work, we ask the Lord to bless the ground so that we'll be able to do just that.
I have never been one to stock up out of fear. For one thing, I know that we can lose those things in a heartbeat. Things of this earth are only temporary and can be taken or destroyed so quickly. We need to prepare our inner man and that's what I am trying to focus on mostly. I'm not saying that my family is not preparing, because we definitely are, I only mean that we are doing so in the spirit in which you are writing.
Thank you for sharing. :-)

I guess I never thought of why I have a pantry. I keep stocking it up, and it seems as fast as I have something stocked up it gets used up. We have a 3 freezers full of food. If someone needs something I would be more than willing to give it away. How do you get to the poing that your pantry is so stocked up that you can give a car load and not make a dent. I would like to be that stocked up.
I am thinkg about the question and I want to be abel to give away to those in need.
My son was in a terrible accident and some friends of ours brought over loads of groceries for us; not because we needed them it was because they thought we wouldn't have time to get to the store.
How do you go about it with out offending someone. I guess I am not sure who to help out. I think my family lives to much nof a sucluded life. I am going to change that and look for more people to help. We have plenty. Thank you for your wisdom.
