January 30 - 2 frugals a day
1. Using plastic milk jugs for a variety of things. If you're like me I still have to buy my milk - and doing child care I go through many gallons each week.
Some ideas...
*You lay it on it's side with the handle up and cut at an angle to make a scoop for feed.
*I cut the top off leaving the bottom and about three to four inches on the sides - fill with soil and start seedlings. I do this with the children and they plant nasturtiums or marigolds. Make sure you put a little something in the bottom for drainage (a few rocks,etc.). I don't poke holes in the bottoms of the children's and as long as they don't over water they seem to do o.k. For my seedlings, though, I do poke holes as they are out in the greenhouse and draining is just fine.
*I saw in the Tightwad Gazette that you can cut the bottoms off and put the top over your tender seedlings when it gets cold - instant cold frame!
*And I love this one - Cut the top and handle off (at an angle) and use the rest to make a toilet brush holder! Very inventive!
2. Saved my butter wrappers yesterday, folded them and put in a baggie in the refrigerator to use when rubbing butter on the top of my homemade bread or for greasing a pan.

These are great tips. I do use the butter wrapper thingy too. We also use some plastice drink containers as funnels when one is not around.

Awesome frugal ideas... I love to reuse stuff... makes me feel not so wasteful. As to your chicken question on my blog... All of the chickens that I mentioned Production Red, Buff Orpinton and White Leghorn are all big brown egg layers. If you are wanting a good dual purpose chicken though you can't go wrong with a New Hampshire. They were breed specifically from the Rhode Island Red to be good layers and they are a meaty chicken to boot. If you are wanting a meat chicken breed then go with a Cornish Cross. They are not the best egg layers but you get meat in 6-8 weeks.

Those are really good ideas. I save butter wrappers too. Getting every little bit and use of products really does help stretch the budget.
