From scratch challenge...

Posted in In The Kitchen

Did you know you can buy packaged crock pot meals for your crock pot?  Good grief...is that insane or what!  Every time I see a commercial advertising them I just crack up!  But it is sooooo telling about our society.  So here is my challenge...let's make something from scratch that is quite often made from an instant pouch.  This week...make some hot chocolate for your children/family from scratch.  It's yummy and so much better for you!

Here's a quick recipe from the cocoa container...
1/2 cup sugar     1/3 cup hot water
1/4 cup cocoa     4 cups of milk
dash salt         3/4 tsp. vanilla

Mix sugar, cocoa and salt in saucepan; stir in water.  Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture boils; boil and stir 2 minutes.  Stir in milk and heat - do not boil.  Remove from heat; add vanilla.
six servings

amen! I know what you mean!

I also comment every time I see those commercials where they are selling prepackaged hot dogs too. I mean come on, how hard is it to put them together at home???

good gravy!

The packaged crock pot meals are disgusting. We bought one to try and it was just awful! Tasted, and smelled, like dog food!

This is great, you should try and come up with a challenge for us every week. Thanks for the recipe.

You are SO right!! Just dumping a bag of frozen stuff (made with who knows what) into a crock pot is certainly NOT cooking!!!

I will be making your cocoa recipe for the kids tomorrow. On cold days they have it after school sometimes..it will be a big treat!

Hey I took your challenge and didn't even know about it. I made a big pan of gingerbread from scratch this weekend. Normally I would have used a box mix. I did good!. I see the frozen crockpot packages in the store. But it's cheaper to make it from scratch for my family 'cause I would need to buy 2 or 3 just for one meal. Love the challenge.
Sincerely, Brenda

I am up for the challenge!

speaking of scratch, did you hear about the newly married "blond?"
her groom said his mom used to make bread and cakes and all sorts of stuff from "scratch"... so this new bride, wanting to please her husband, went shopping. she couldn't find "scratch" at the grocery store, or the Super *mart, and finally someone told her to try a local animal feed store. in she went and asked for "scratch" - lo and behold, the man knew what she was talking about and asked if she wanted a 5, 10, 20, or 50-pound bag. well, thinking about how much her MIL made from this magic ingredient, she said 50. Once home, she proceeded to make bread out of her "scratch" for her dearly beloved.
and I will end the story there. lol

When my oldest was very young - I bought one of those "Hamburger Helper" box meals - the kind where you brown 1lb of ground beef to make the 'meal'. Once I opened it up I realized it was just boxed mac and cheese you added the beef to!!! AAaack! Never bought it again, LOL. Now I *have* since then added beef and a can of peas to a box of mac and cheese in a fix for a meal ... I'm not saying it was a bad idea...But, honestly!
