Homeschooling More than One Child

{ 10:56, Tuesday, February 19, 2008 } { Posted in Our Homeschooling Journey } { 2 comments } { Link }

I know there are many of you homeschooling moms out there who are homeschooling more than one child, in fact I know a few of you homeschooling several children in several grade levels all at once. My question for you my friends is, how do you do it?

I find myself so overwhelmed teaching just one. I don't have enough hours in the day as it is it seems. And with my Maddy (age 6 in May) getting so excited over the prospect of mommy being her teacher after she finishes this school year and the overwhelming duty of teaching Nick(7) already, not to mention, my active little Emily (3 in April), I'm just wondering how I'm going to do it?

Now don't get me wrong, I want to do it! I can't wait to homeschool all 3 of my children. I'm just a little intimidated is all. With my oldest 2 being so close in age and so young, they'll both require a lot of my time in a one on one manner. I've looked into unit studies and although there are a lot of things I liked about them, I'm really liking the stability of my workbook curriculum. I wouldn't mind adding a little extra "fun" and different things to the mix, but to start off with, we need our stability. I'll have one child, Nick, going into 2nd grade curriculum, who is a very strong reader, and Maddy going into a first grade curriculum, who is just learning to read, and she is also my child who is smart, but likes to do things the hard way, and like I said, there's also my active almost 3 year old, who wants to be part of it all too.  So if you wonderful friends wouldn't mind sharing with me, how is it you homeschool so many children all at once?

Teaching multiple children can be tough! I am teaching many children (5-6) depending on the day. We use Ambleside Online (www.amblesideonline.org) and LOVE it!

My 11 year old is in Year 4, 10 yo in Y3, almost 10 and 9 yos in Y2, 6 yo Y1 and I have 6 yo twins, one of whom does some K work and both listen to Y0 books. I also have a two year old and babysit another 2 year old.

I love that Ambleside is so rich and adaptable (and FREE!) They have a schedule set up, but there's no requirement that you follow it. It's all great, living books, and I'm a book-a-holic. You can combine two children into the same year, since the books are so challenging and it makes it easier for you.

I'd love to talk more, but don't want to write a blog in your comments! Stop by and say hi! My homestead blog is just for recipes, but my homeschoolblogger blog is about our family and schooling.

Blessings!

I actually first started homeschooling one for six months and then brought the other two home. I enjoy it alot more ! We do unit studies and it can cater to all levels of learning. My youngest will copy stuff, color pages but also participates in science experiments. The older ones have more writing and reporting but the discussions are amazing!!! Put it in God's hands and bring those babies home where they belong!!!

Blessings,
Flossie
