Powdered Milk

We are not fortunate enough...yet, to have a source of milk such as a dairy cow or goat. But hopefully (or should I say prayerfully) someday we will. So for now, I'm deperate for a way to keep milk for my growing kids and nieces in my house without having to go to the store every other day. We are fortunate enough however, to recieve WIC, which provides us with milk, cheese, and a few other commodities. But with 5 children, it is just not enough. Only one of our kids is old enough to qualify, so that gives us about 4-6 gallons of milk for a month. My nieces are here with us at least 50-60 hours a week and through at least 2 meals a day. So when they are with us, we go through a gallon about every 1-2 days. That also includes cooking with it as well. And we just don't have the money to buy so much milk all the time. Which brings me to my topic. I recently read up on powdered milk on this site...Hillbilly Housewife-Intro to Powdered Milk. There I found a plethora of info on powdered milk. So I took the plunge and bought some at the store last week and decided to mix some up last night. With the WIC that we recieve I am able to mix powdered and fresh milk half and half and it really doesn't taste any different. So my milk is lasting twice as long, and I'm not having to go to the store every couple of days. My kids had it with their breakfast and there was no difference to them.  Others may not feel the same way I do about it, and I know there are things about PM that aren't as good for you as the real deal, but for us it works. I hope that this may help. Blessings,

Sara

we use it

I have been using powdered milk for quite awhile. I try to always have some on hand. The cheapest place around me that has it is Aldi's. When I first started using it, I mixed it half and half with regular milk like you are, then I started doing more powdered and now most of my kids will drink straight powdered milk, after it is chilled of course. However, I do have one that will still drink it or use it freshly made (warm). It has saved us alot of money. I also use it alot of cooking, baking, puddings, gravy, whatever. It does work better if you let is get cold before using and somethings it doesn't work quite as well but you can adjust as you go. It is also great for trips. My kids love to have their chocolate milk every morning and when we went on a week long trip, I took powdered milk and I could mix it up in the hotel room or camping and they could still have their milk, much easier than trying to keep a gallon of milk with us all the time.

We've always used powdered milk. I bake with it to save on the "real" stuff....and we typically drink 2% milk, so I will mix a batch of powdered with half the gallon of store-bought to stretch it. We tend to prefer it when I really chill the powdered milk first in a glass container, then add it to the store milk (or add it at night and let chill overnight).
The problem we had with the WIC milk was here there were using the Parmalat box milk and there is a distinct flavor in the high-heat treated pasteurization of that milk....that and I'm sorry...milk in liquid form just shouldn't be on a shelf....my mind couldn't get over that part!
