Growing Grapes?

{ 02:46, Tuesday, July 29, 2008 } { Posted in Homestead Dreams } { 1 comments } { Link }

I'm in a time of great learning right now, and am trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can about homesteading in the city and what I can and can't do here.

I have an area at the side of my home that is semi shady and it has some kind of "thing" built that looks to me for vining plants. It's made from old pipes and is shaped like a box. It's quite large, at least 8'x10'. I would like to try and grow grapes on it, but have no idea on how to go about that. I live in Oklahoma, and know it's possible to grow them, but was wondering if anyone has any particular words of wisdom.

Blessings, sara

sara, I would go to isons.com

They have a link for muscadine (not sure on spelling) grapes and one vine can yield from 60-80lbs depending on variety. They are "wet scar" as opposed to "dry scar" like you buy at the super market, but frankly, I'd be eating them, juicing them, making jelly, etc and wouldn't care. :)

They also have regular grapes. I want to say their plants are like $7.50 each but I'm waiting for my cat' in the mail. My friend read me prices out of her's over the phone as I browsed online and they seemed pretty reasonable . . . . we just don't have a place to plant more grapes yet!

I HTH!

Ashley
