Rug Making

{ 10:58, Thursday, July 17, 2008 } { Posted in Country Crafting } { 5 comments } { Link }

I have been busy in my down time making a rug for my kitchen. I wanted one that matched the colors in my kitchen and one that would be comfortable to stand on while doing dishes. I bought a bit of fabric, mixed with some that I already had and tried out several methods of rugmaking. I started by trying to braid it, but the fabric I had was just too thin for braiding. I tried making a toothbrush rug, but I'm afraid it would have taken me too long, and I wanted to get it done pretty quickly.

So I finally settled on crocheting it. And it is working up quite quickly. I'm making an oval rug and will probably make it about a 2'x3' or a little larger. I'm only having a few minutes here and there to work on it, but I'm sure I'll have it done by week's end.

So I got to wondering, are there any of you who enjoy the past time of rug making? What are your favorite techniques? Favorite fabrics to work with?

I make rugs from time to time when I have collected enough scrap material. I do the toothbrush rugs, but I'm thinking of crocheting one. I'd like to use rug yarn this time, but it's kinda hard to find.

I am trying to make a rug for my laundry room. We have hardwood floors and the baskets are wearing of the finsh. I'm using an old feece christmas blanket anf it is staring to curl. I think fleece is a little too stretchy for this project. Has anyone else used fleece to make a rag rug. I really would like to finsh this rug so I will try to make it work.

I have never made a rug, but after reading twice that you make your own, I am seriously thinking of making one. I take that back, I used to make rugs with my grandmother, on her loom, but that is a completely different way of making a rug.

Although I have never made a rug, I do crochet. I had never thought to crochet one using fabric, what an awesome idea!

I have had great sucess over the years making crochet rugs. I tailored one for the main bathroom. When I learn how to take pictures and post them I will. I have a large kitchen with two doors. I made three for the kitchen, one for the sink,two for he doors. I use two strands of yarn, one plain and one that I have cut and rolled out of different colors of scrap yarn. I am very blessed that a few of years ago I found two large cones of yarn at the thrift store. I think it was actually rug yarn. I have used this yarn for the solid color. The first one I made like this was about 8 years ago and it is still going strong, It just won't wear out (LOL). Good luck. It is so satisfying to walk into a room and see the works of your own hands adorning your home.
