Simple Uses for Grass Clippings
Posted in Gardening Goodies
|
We use grass clippings alot in our garden beds. My husband is always on the lookout for people that put bags of clippings along the curb. He refers to them as "bags of gold" since they are so valuable for the garden.
The following little bit of wisdom comes from Storey's Country Wisdom and Know-How book.
Grass clippings are great for improving garden soil. There are several ways to use them:
- Add them to your compost pile. They'll give you the nitrogen you need to make the pile "cook." Mix them well with other materials, such as weeds, leaves, or hay.
- Spread them around the garden area, then till them in. They're an excellent green manure.
- Let them dry, then spread them in the garden, or spread them in thin layers when green. They are one of the best mulches you can find.

I'm not sure what the chemical life is, but I have thought about doing that. The only thing I always think of is, What if they use chemicals on their lawn? If they have Chemlawn or something spray for weeds, then those chemicals will be in my garden.
Have you researched whether the chemical will still be on it or what do you think?

Hi Anne,
I have missed talking to you! I hope all is well, have you left the "group"? I have been thinking about leaving, don't seem to have much in common with them anymore. How are the kids? Did you DH find another job? So many questions, sorry!
About the grass clippings, do you have problems with grass seed? We are having a time with our garden! I added cow manure a couple of years ago, it was full of grass seed. I have been pulling grass since, my DH sprayed this last fall and again this spring to "kill" the grass but it is back! I have not been using a mulch of grass clippings because I was afraid it add to my grass problems!
I am working on a compost pile. I think this fall I might be able to use it!
I am anxious to hear from you!
Blessings,
Annette
