Incubator....to buy or to build...

Posted in Musings of a Mama

That is the question! So in true home-schooling style, we decided to cancel our order of baby chicks and try to hatch them ourselves. (Talk about an educational opportunity!) Now, the question arises...do we build one or buy one? For the sake of homeschooling, I'd love to build one with our children....but I'm also a bit afraid to have a homemade electrical appliance running 24/7 for 3 weeks! Also, I have to admit that I'm being lured in by the self-turning options out there....

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

We purchased a small incubator on eBay for our children's first venture into the world of hatching chicks ... only problem is we haven't gotten to use it yet! We "sold out" and bought the chicks already hatched this past year. But we will be using it next year on our actual homestead, though. We were able to find it pretty inexpensively, so maybe you could check eBay ... Craigslist is another idea ... or have you "googled" it to see what would be involved in making your own incubator safely? I felt the same way as you about having a homemade electrical device running all the time, which is why we bought one. I think ours only holds 6 eggs or less, though.

I can't wait to do chickens, but I don't think that I'll hatch them myself! :)
