It’s close to 8 p.m. Central time. There are three different kinds of frogs singing right now, but I only recognize the upland chorus frog. We left Cumming at 8 a.m. and got here at a decent time. I was impressed with Alex’s pasture fence that he put up over a weekend last month. We unloaded the truck then Hayes and I went to town for something to eat. Alex started constructing bunk beds in the shelter and I helped when we got back. The beds are nice and hopefully we won’t have to worry much about mice. Alex said while was tearing the canvas off the popup, a mouse ran up his arm and scared the bejeebers out of him! We plan to attach the chuckwagon to the shelter walls instead of the monstrosity it’s built on now. Alex got in trouble when we got here for leaving dirty dishes in the sink, not putting up clean dishes and not emptying the sawdust potty. He said he’d been tired and dirty and just wanted to get home. SATURDAY – No sooner did we settle in Friday night to watch Harry Potter #4 than a mouse ran across a board in the shelter. So I start thinking about this PBS special on hiking the Appalachian Trail and hikers having mice running over them at night! The frogs were singing and I heard a screech owl. Saturday started out windy with a short rain. We got the shelter settled – the chuckwagon attached to the wall and more shelves put up. Alex started on our storage shed and got the floor and one wall framed. It looks so good! Hayes worked on making a mouse trap. I took a nap. This trip I was ill-prepared for cooking. No oil, butter or cheese we went into town for dinner. This was after we put a gate up front and I laughed that Alex over-measured yet another gate by about two feet, but it’s up! Coming home from dinner, we encountered a mess of frogs in one mud puddle. Breeding big time. Mostly upland chorus frogs but I found one spring peeper. I don’t know how many frogs Hayes caught – there were so many and we must’ve watched the 30 minutes. One clasped onto Hayes’ wrist and Alex had a hard time prying it loose. This morning there were still three mating pairs and some eggs. Hayes and I spotted one pair laying eggs, which was pretty cool. Cooked eggs and grits on the propane stove. I hate washing dishes anyway but in the shelter without running water, it’s the worst! Mullein is coming up everywhere.Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 28 of 29 } { Next Page } |
